Lovers of the finer things in life should not miss Joburg Ballet's annual visit to Knysna, the most prestigious event on the Knysna-Sedgefield Hospice calendar. The South African Ballet Theatre, the country’s foremost professional ballet company first travelled to Knysna in 2001 in order to raise funds for Hospice. Many years later the event is still as popular as ever. Joburg Ballet, as the company is now named, is Johannesburg’s professional ballet company, proudly resident at the Joburg Theatre. The company consists of dancers skilled in both classical and contemporary dance and the performances are always outstanding.

The Merrell Adventure Racing Team are hosting the fourth 24 HR ADVENTURE RACE in the Garden Route. The event is an overnight 22-24 hour adventure race. NAVIGATION, NIGHT RACING and TEAMWORK. This time IT IS A RACE! The race is the fourth race in the Adventure 1 South Africa series, which comprises 5 races around the country. Each race will be non-stop, and involve the core disciplines of trekking, kayaking, mountain biking, and navigation. The “Premier Mixed” category team that completes the series with the most points from their best 3 of 5 races, will be crowned the South African Adventure Racing Champions.

Three international violin competitions, three unanimous judges, three gold medals - Yi-Jia Susanne Hou is the first ever violinist to achieve this! She became a scholarship student at age nine at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto and received her Bachelor of Music from Juilliard School in New York. Bryan Wallick is also a graduate of that school and is considered one the great American virtuoso pianists of his generation. Together they will produce exceptional music.

The Knysna Yacht Club will be celebrating the start of the new sailing season with their annual opening cruise, a tradition going back over a hundred years. The members of the yacht club are invited to get their sailing dinghies, canoes, racing boats, cruising yachts and power boats onto the water to sail in a fleet from Thesen's Jetty past the yacht club to salute the incumbent commodore. The cruise normally attracts 40 to 50 craft of various kinds, and the lagoon will be alive with the colourful sails of the many dinghies and yachts. It is a spectacle not to be missed! Cake and Tea will be served afterwards.

The inaugural SANParks week was held in 2006. It was aimed at linking the South African national parks system to the global national movement and to also showcase the best of South Africa’s national parks. Since its inception in 2006; national parks week has seen an influx of over 130 000 day visitors in all participating parks. The week grants free access to most of the 21 national parks for day visitors, especially people from the local communities. However, it does not include free access to accommodation facilities and other tourist activities.

A wheelchair race exclusively for disabled athletes! And - every year it is getting bigger and better! The number of entries has increased dramatically, with disabled athletes and other persons in wheelchairs flocking to this annual event. The Challenge is unique as being the first and only event exclusively for the disabled in South Africa. Athletes in racing wheelchairs, adapted bicycles, hand cycles, basketball chairs and ordinary wheelchairs have made this into the premier sporting event for the disabled on the South African sporting calendar. It undoubtedly has the potential to develop into one of the best events of its kind in the world!

The Buco Lions Karoo to Coast Mountain Bike Race has been selected as an Official Premier Seeding Event of the 2019 Cape Town Cycle Tour. The event is a 100km off road race from UNIONDALE to KNYSNA via the Prince Alfred's Pass. The route is scenic, challenging and riders are encouraged to train sufficiently for this event in order to maximise the enjoyment of the experience. Only 4500 entries will be made available in 2019.

Teams from across the world design and build solar-powered vehicles to drive across South Africa in an eight-day event. Local and international solar-powered cars travel as far as they can on various roads and loops between Pretoria and Cape Town. In 2018, the teams are expected to travel distances between 2,500 and 5,000 km. The 2018 event traverses some of the world’s most beautiful and diverse landscapes, from savannah and mountains to coastal forest. International teams are attracted to the challenge of competing in varying road conditions and weather situations, across an altitude that ranges by nearly 2,000 metres.

2018 information - Single speed mountain bikers are the counterculture of off-road cycling and although their choice of riding with only one gear (which is inevitably always the incorrect one) appears to be masochistic, it is, in fact, an act of purity. As such, single speeders are some of the fittest and most skilled riders around. Each year’s Single Speed championship has a dedicated theme and one is expected to dress accordingly. For the 2018 event it will be "every village needs an idiot". Hydration is another challenge too and instead of water points there are beer stops, which are mandatory. Known for the wild and somewhat eccentric entries this sport attracts, it is bound to be a spectacular spectator treat too!

2017 information - The prestigious Leisure Isle Spring Bowls Tournament takes place on 4, 5 and 6 September at the Leisure Isle bowling club, where 96 players will be playing from as far afield as Cape Town and East London. Huge prizes, lots of lucky draws and spot prizes are up for grabs. The public is urged to go watch some of the best bowlers in the country competing against each other.

2017 information - The historic "Seven Passes" meandering route between George and Knysna passes through heavy, lushly indigenous forest used to be the Garden Route’s main highway connecting George with Knysna. The Seven Passes takes you past seven gorges cut deep by rivers flowing to the sea, offering some of the best non-technical MTB in the country. 7 Passes MTB also offers a shorter route for the younger and not so fit riders who still want to be part of the action at the Knysna Waterfront finish. The Leeuwenbosch Dairies sponsored 39km route starts from the humble little village of Karatara.

More than 300 rowers and their supporters will descend on Knysna for two days of racing, showcasing some of the top rowing talent in South Africa. In classic, rowing regatta style, tables, benches and umbrellas will line the Belvidere Water’s edge to accommodate spectators at the event.

The Grail of Trail™. The Otter Run has been dubbed “the Holy Grail of Trail Running.” At 42km it is a full trail marathon that traverses South Africa’s most iconic hiking trail; the Otter Trail, arguably one of the most beautiful trails on the planet. The Otter Run is the only time when trail running is permitted on the Otter Trail. It is a trail run on the upper end of the scale with regards to the technical difficulty of the trail and as such demands a high level of technical proficiency and endurance from participants.

The results are breath taking and makes for a challenging day out. The trails will take participants along "roads less travelled", through Karatara Forest, the Goudveld Forest, the Voortrekker Route and from Windmeulnek to Platbos.

Our event , sponsored by Frost Brothers Classic cars, will be called the Century Charity Run and will be open to all cars and motorcycles 25 years and older, where the combined age of the car and driver/rider must equal or exceed a Century (100 years). The number of participants will be limited to 100 and the participants will be required to travel 100 km to the end point where an optional, affordable, lunch will be available and where the prize giving will be held.

2018 information - Similar to the Chelsea Flower Show, there will be mini gardens created by some of the prominent landscapers, and nurseries from the Garden Route will showcase their work. The idea is to focus on making your garden your piece of Shangri-La. The expo will coincide with the annual GRBG spring sale at the nursery where really affordable indigenous plants will be on sale. The expo will also feature the annual Wildflower Show, done in conjunction with the George flower arrangers. Local musicians will provide live music throughout the day and a themed art exhibition will be held - focusing on nature and plants / animals. This region of the country is not named the Garden Route for nothing.

Last year, 392 people took part (up 33 entries from the previous year) and R10 741.00 was raised for this important cause. This year we are hoping to get at least 400 people or more to sign up! The Knysna Extreme Triathlon is a challenging Point-To-Point, self-supported race that takes place along South Africa’s scenic Garden Route. The course starts with a 5 km swim in the Knysna Estuary, followed by a 174 km cycle through coastal, mountain and semi-desert scenery. This is then followed by a 50 km run through plantations and the Knysna forest. It is a grueling, yet scenic route that takes triathletes back to the purest form of the sport. The route will test your fitness levels and pure mental strength and determination. An altitude gain of nearly 3,400m over a total distance of 229 km, makes it an extreme triathlon that offers an exciting personal challenge for athletes.

Attendees are requested to bring a gift, which Father Christmas, who always makes an appearance, can collect and distribute to the needy children of Knysna. The 8th staging of the Prudential PE Plett will be set off from the prestigious Kurland Polo Fields, only a few minutes drive from the heart of Plettenberg Bay and finish 4 days later on a massive downhill flow trail run into Crossways Farm Village. As there is no time bar on the Prudential PE PLETT even a social mountain biker could complete the TOUGH One. The LITE is designed for those social riders with an average daily distances of 60km and elevation of 1200m .

2019 information - The Knysna Cycle Tour is back with new routes and challenges and promises exhilarating, scenic rides for the whole family! We will keep you enthralled and entertained whether you are an elite rider or a newbie cyclist. 3 exciting categories: MTB Events (the 80 km and 50 km races are seeding events for the 2020 Cape Town Cycle Tour! - the 30 km race has an e-bike category), Road Races (the 104 km Road Race is a seeding event for the 2020 Cape Town Cycle Tour - the Road Races are for road bikes and mountain bikes), Spur Children's Tour (which sees about 3,500 children participate in the fun ride and guarantees each child a medal and goodie bag.). Get ready for the ride of your life!

2019 information - The Whale Rally is a serious biker’s rally, started in 2005. One of the best biker rallies in South Africa. Not hardcore, just a rally where you can relax, have fun and enjoy an unforgettable weekend with biker friends. A rally for bikers – we do our best to not allow entry to those who are not bikers & who do not understand the biking lifestyle. Over the years this rally has grown from strength to strength with around 1500 bikers having attended in some years.

2019 information - The CA2CX is a mountain biking tour that every keen cyclist should experience. This isn't a faced-paced race but a fun tour that takes you through the picturesque landscape of our beautiful province each year in June. Please note that race entries are limited to 60 riders. The daily route, of about 100km per stage consists of farmlands, spectacular landscapes and amazing views. Couples, Singles and Groups (Teams) are welcome! Riders can enter one of the following groups: 14 - 18 km/ph, 18 - 22 km/ph, 22 km/ph upwards. Accommodation throughout the race will be 4-5 star guesthouses and hotels.

2019 information - Local surf break Victoria Bay will host a high profile professional surfing competition this month. Top international athletes will face off against our best local talent in the Vic Bay Classic from 20 to 22 June. It will be the first time in 25 years that Victoria Bay has featured on the South African World Surf League Qualifying Series. Over 100 competitors will face off in men's, women's and pro junior divisions in the inaugural event. The Vic Bay Classic will conclude the 2019 City Surf Series and will be the seventh stop on the WSL Africa Tour.

2019 information - The Plett ARTS Festival was launched by Plett Tourism to showcase Plett’s cultural and heritage life and anchor the winter season. Plett Tourism will be handling the marketing and branding of extensive visual art exhibitions, organised and presented by the artists of Plett, in collaboration with artists and performers from Kwano. The Kids of Kurland will also be on the block with comedy at The Fringe and Emily Moon will be titillating your senses with delicious film and compelling food at the Plett Food and Film. All that is required from you is to wrap up against the chilly winter evenings, warm your cockles at the open nights of art, immerse yourself in food and film, and laugh your hearts out at The Fringe.

2018 information - The BIG5 Challenge is the Ultimate Multisport Challenge. A race aimed at athletes who push the limits and challenge the status quo, the BIG5 Challenge truly is a league of its own. Competitors participate in 5 events over the 10 days of the festival. Ranked by their cumulative time, the athlete who completes all five events in the least amount of time will be the 1 race winner. The BIG5 Challenge has become a bucket list item on the international endurance and adventure race calendar due to the unbelievable natural beauty experienced during all of the 5 races on offer.

2019 infomation - In 2018, Greenpop moved the Festival of Action to the Garden Route in response to the fires that devastated the area the previous year. After an incredibly successfully 2018 event, we are returning to the region in 2019 to build upon our existing work, bigger and better than before with old and new partners, projects and renewed energy! Greenpop aims to partner with and contribute to the many local environmental and social initiatives and be part of an environmental solution, while also teaching skills and lessons that are relevant across the globe - sharing and learning in a place that highlights some of the challenges that our planet faces on a whole.

We provide the opportunity for people of all ages and fitness levels to absorb the magic of these famous forests with friends and family. You can loosen up your off-day legs with a brisk hike over a longer 10km distance or amble the shorter 6km and 2.5km walks at fairy listening pace. Who knows, you may just spot a Knysna Loerie, or better, an elephant. Our aim is to educate the ecological importance of the forests whilst embracing quality family time, health and wellness for all ages in an eco-friendly way.

2019 information - Naturally, there'll be oysters at this year's Flavours of Knysna - the Knysna Oyster Festival's annual cooking competition - but they won't be the subject of the competition itself. Instead, that honour will go to the versatile canapé when local chefs come out to play on Wednesday 26 June. They can make any kind of canapés they like and the guests will judge them, and vote on them, accordingly. The idea is to highlight the many talents of the chefs by allowing them to cast their nets more widely than they could when entries were limited to oysters alone. Music for the evening will be provided by Knysna's stalwart DJ, Alan Sass. Drinks at the cash bar will come from local breweries and Knysna's own gin distillery.

2019 information - Whether you compete in the half (21km) or the full (42km) version, the race offers several unique highlights found in no other race anywhere in the world. Much of the run takes place deep in the forest with a breath-taking view over the Knysna lagoon into The Heads, for inspiration towards the finish. If you haven’t done this race yet, it’s an absolute must! Padding through the enchanting forest, the scent of pine trees, and views of golden fields and coastlines on the horizon, it’s easy to forget that some of this race is uphill.

2019 information - This trail run offers 3 routes of varying lengths and difficulty, taking runners through the forests made famous by Daleen Mathee (the late authoress of Circles in the forest, Fiela’s child, Moerbeibos and others). The 15km and 27km routes have been chosen not only to challenge the intermediate to experienced trail runners but to provide them with an opportunity to experience the deepest secrets at the heart of the Knysna forest. Single track and terrain to excite trail runners of all ability including an easier route for the beginner trail runner of 9km.

On the 3 July, Emily Moon and chef Alex Olivier transport you to a secret island in Patagonia where you’ll feast from a table cooked exclusively on the open fire and meet the legendary Francis Mallmann. Described by CN Traveller as "a meat-smoking nomad who quotes poetry and has barbecued for David Beckham and the King of Spain", Mallmann is also Argentina’s most renowned cook, catapulted to fame after he was featured in the culinary documentary series, Chef’s Table.
