A three-day, family-friendly extravaganza building on the impressive successes of the Mossel Bay Municipality’s Dias Festival / Diasfees over the past 30 years. In 2019 the festival will incorporate activities aimed at celebrating the rich maritime history of the Port of Mossel Bay, South Africa’s oldest port. The action-packed Mossel Bay Dias & Port Festival programme includes a street parade, stage show with national as well as local artists, exhibitions and stalls, a beer tent, tea garden live entertainment, cultural showcases, arts and crafts markets, food stalls, children’s entertainment and numerous other family-friendly activities.

The Veteran Tour will take part on the eve of the George Old Car Show on 8 February. The Veteran Tour will depart from Klaarstroom on Friday morning. We expect some 20 cars to take place. Two or three of these will be single cylinder cars manufactured before 1905 and will fit in nicely with the focus on rare and exclusive cars.

This event is hosted annually by the Southern Cape Old Car Club and the funds raised are donated to various local organizations. The focus in the main arena will be on rare and exotic cars, such as Dr Waldo Scribante’s 1971 Porsche 914, of which only seven were manufactured. We want to focus on rare collectors’ items which are not readily available to everybody. We believe that these cars will lend special status to the George Old Car Show.

The weekend begins with the Friday Night Ceilidh at Loerie Park. Saturday's activity commences in town at 9.30am with the Street March competition followed by Massed Pipes and Drums through the centre of town/N2. This is a spectacle not to be missed and only seen in Knysna once a year! From 11.00am onward the Celtic Festival continues at Loerie park featuring the following activities and events: Pipe Band Competition, Highland Dancing Championship, Scottish Country Dancing, Highland Games, Lunch time entertainment, Beer Garden and food stalls. Then from 5.00pm to 9.00pm, and probably the highlight of the festival for some, is the Sundowners Concert.

The eighth Celtic concert and forerunner of the Celtic Festival, kicks off at 5:00 PM at Loerie Park. Jenny and the Jameses, whose popularity continues to grow, will open the show with their outrageously gifted array of melodies. Fresh from recording their latest CD, Cape Town favourites, Blacksmith, will perform a full set in their uniquely charismatic style. Next up, the Knysna & Districts Pipe Band, and the Castle Rock Ceilidh Band, will take your breath away with their moving repertoire. Scotty and the Terriers are joining the mix this year to add a rowdy touch with their set full of Celtic pub favourites. Crowd participation is something of a given when this outfit hits the stage.

South African theatre company Contagious Theatre, whose work has been enjoyed by audiences both locally and abroad, will be bringing Snow Goose to Knysna Montessori Primary School, on the 19th of February. The Snow Goose is a timeless classic based on the Paul Gallico short story. A chance encounter between a recluse and a young girl blossoms as they nurse an injured wild goose back to health in marshes of Essex in the 1930’s. Their idyllic world is turned upside down as the chaos of war intrudes. With the use of masks, ingenious staging and the performance skills of Taryn Bennett and James Cairns, Jenine Collocott has created a theatre gem that has enthralled audiences all over the country.

The Wilderness Hotel will once again house the main venue with food and liquor stalls, while the garden and lawns surrounding the sparkling pool will provide a superb background for activities as well as the main music stage. Activities will spill over onto the Wilderness common, where ample parking will also be available. Zanta studied and graduated from Juilliard School in New York and gave her recital debut in the city’s famous Carnegie Hall. Miro was born in Bulgaria, but has lived in South Africa for many years and is concert master of the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra. Olive Sandilands hails from Mossel Bay and is known for her delicate and sensitive playing. Together this will be a concert of wonderful pieces played by expert musicians!

The new show titled Choruses, Concertos…and Carmen! will feature only local talent who are active members of the Carpe Musicam! orchestra and choir. Conductor Norman Carless is interested to see if the support for a more classical concert will be as great as the Celtic-themed event which attracted more than 900 music lovers to Eden Place and another 400 to the Knysna concert. There will not only be classical music on the programme. There will be opera and solo favourites that are seldom performed in our area. Grant Lottering will attempt to ride 1,340km from Patensie in the Eastern Cape to Paarl, over 17 mountains, - a vertical height gain of 16,400m - in a single non-stop ride. He aims to finish this unforgiving journey in under 96 hours, making it the most extreme solo fundraising ride ever undertaken in South Africa. The first 200km will take Lottering westward up the Baviaanskloof, riding into the first night via the Prince Albert Pass to Knysna, following which the Seven Passes Route, which crosses 10 rivers and seven gorges, to George awaits.

From Vladivostok comes Alexander Ramm and his superb playing of his very special cello! The only Russian national finalist and laureate of the most prestigious Paulo Cello Competition in Helsinki, he has won many other awards and medals for his wonderful performances. Bryan Wallick studied at Juilliard School in NY and the Royal Academy of Music in London and is considered a great virtuoso of his generation. These two musicians have played together for the Knysna Concert Series at previous evenings and together produce the most vibrant and memorable music.

Three international violin competitions, three unanimous judges, three gold medals - Yi-Jia Susanne Hou is the first ever violinist to achieve this! She became a scholarship student at age nine at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto and received her Bachelor of Music from Juilliard School in New York. Bryan Wallick is also a graduate of that school and is considered one the great American virtuoso pianists of his generation. Together they will produce exceptional music.

The Eden to Addo Great Corridor Hike is an expedition for and about conservation. You will experience 5 of South Africa’s 7 biomes and probably some of the wildest areas in South Africa. You will be part of a small, exclusive group of maximum 20 people that makes its way to Addo. There is no organised trail to follow. You will walk through areas where the last truly free elephants, black rhino and buffalo still roam without fences to hamper their movement. You will follow the spoor of leopard, bush buck and red hartebeest.

The Knysna Yacht Club will be celebrating the start of the new sailing season with their annual opening cruise, a tradition going back over a hundred years. The members of the yacht club are invited to get their sailing dinghies, canoes, racing boats, cruising yachts and power boats onto the water to sail in a fleet from Thesen's Jetty past the yacht club to salute the incumbent commodore. The cruise normally attracts 40 to 50 craft of various kinds, and the lagoon will be alive with the colourful sails of the many dinghies and yachts. It is a spectacle not to be missed! Cake and Tea will be served afterwards.

The inaugural SANParks week was held in 2006. It was aimed at linking the South African national parks system to the global national movement and to also showcase the best of South Africa’s national parks. Since its inception in 2006; national parks week has seen an influx of over 130 000 day visitors in all participating parks. The week grants free access to most of the 21 national parks for day visitors, especially people from the local communities. However, it does not include free access to accommodation facilities and other tourist activities.
