Bein Private Cellar

As possibly the smallest commercial estate in the Cape, the vineyard comprises only 2,2 hectares, exclusively planted to Merlot vines. This small size allows for a caring and environmentally responsible viticulture, based on the latest knowledge and techniques, including Precision Viticulture.
Bein are certified by IPW SA (Integrated Production of Wine SA) for environmentally friendly and sustainable viti-viniculture from planting to bottling.
Bein Wine's vineyard is ideally suited for growing Merlot. It is situated on the cooler southern slopes of Stellenbosch's Polkadraai Hills, and is blessed with deep and highly weathered granite soils. The climate is Mediterranean with dry, sunny summers and sufficient rainfall in winter. And the proximity to the coast, with its beautiful panoramic view over False Bay, ensures refreshing breezes and sufficient air humidity. This is particularly important during the warm South African summer for a slow and even ripening of the fruit.

Bein Merlot
The Bein Merlot is a Merlot in classic Pomerol style, elegant and complex. It is our flagship, the optimal synthesis from the wines of our various batches, reflecting best the integrated terroir of our cool southern slope. This wine strives for perfect balance between primary fruit and sweet-spicy barrel flavours.
This Merlot is matured for one year in small 225L oak barrels, of which between 35% and 70% are new, made up of about 95% tight-grain oak from central France, and about 5% American oak for complexity. Our Merlot is generally complemented with a splash of one of the other classic Bordeaux varieties, often Cabernet Sauvignon or Cabernet franc, but also Malbec or Petit Verdot, depending on the vintage.
After bottling, the wine is allowed to mature another year in the bottle before release. It can be enjoyed young, but will certainly reward the patient connoisseur over many years.with beautiful maturation flavours.

Serving suggestion: Serve at 18ºC, open an hour before or decant. Best with a hearty meal such as roast venison or a juicy pasta dish. Also delicious with fine cheese and bread.

Little Merlot
The Little Merlot is the little brother of the Bein Merlot, hence the name. It is made of fruit from the more vigorous parts of our vineyard, determined by aerial infrared photography. Matured for one year in older barriques only, it emphasizes the more fruity side of this variety and convinces with red-berry flavours and a silky texture. The Little Merlot is generally less tannic and earlier accessible than the Bein Merlot, though we still see it as a very serious wine, well able to mature for another 3-4 years after release.

Serving suggestion: This wine is ideally served at 18ºC and shows best as a companion to a meal. With its attractive berry flavours and juicy texture, it sits well on any table, from vegetarian to richly sauced beef.

Pink Merlot
The Pink Merlot is our fun wine, a fruity-dry Rosé made from Merlot grapes. It convinces with its joyfully bright colour, the delicate berry flavours and a lingering aftertaste.

Serving suggestion: This Rosé is the perfect wine for any occasion, as aperitif or as versatile companion to many dishes such as fish and shellfish, salads, even curries and any other summer meal. Or simply enjoy on its own as the ideal sundowner - to match the always-stunning pink sunsets of Africa!
