Knysna Basin Project
The Knysna Basin Project is an NGO based in Knysna, South Africa, focused on coastal system research – particularly how these systems change and how communities can and should live within these systems. Our research is applied and aimed at guiding and facilitating management of our local systems, whilst developing novel conservation approaches for coastal systems in general. The Knysna Basin Project is based on four pathways: Research, Educate, Conserve and Collaborate.
The Knysna Elephants and Forests
The Knysna forest is the largest forest complex in Southern Africa, and is found in the Southern Cape and covers an area of about 60,500 ha. A tiny population of elephants scrape out a living in the forests and the surrounding fynbos. Protected in part by the Garden Route National Park, these are Africa’s most southerly elephants and South Africa’s only free-roaming population - and, as such, come with unique conservation challenges.

Locally Indigenous Flora of Knysna & Surrounds
This group was created to celebrate our local biodiversity. We will focus on our locally indigenous* plants, mosses and fungi which form the cornerstone of a functioning biodiverse system. We hope to learn from each other by the observations, insights and experiences posted here.
Western Heads-Goukamma Conservancy
The Western Heads-Goukamma Conservancy contains important flora, including one of the largest remaining patches of the critically endangered Knysna Sand Fynbos vegetation type. The area is also home to several endangered butterflies, of which the Brenton Blue Butterfly is best known, as well as endangered mammals such as Caracal and Honey Badger. The rest of the invertebrate fauna is a virtual black box awaiting discovery.
Noetzie Conservancy
Noetzie is situated between the Indian Ocean, Sinclair Nature reserve, an indigenous forest covered river bank and a steep headland. Noetzie’s unique location, together with the fact that it is populated by a small community of long term, environmentally aware property owners, has kept the area in a very natural state. The residents of Noetzie elected to form the Noetzie Conservancy, which was registered with Cape Nature in 1999.
