2022 information - The race works much like a raffle, where racers purchase a number. Each of the little yellow plastic ducks has a number. The idea is for the tide and wind to encourage the ducks to ‘swim’ along the water canal under the bridge. Two heats will be held and a final race with 20 of the winners of the heats. There are great cash prizes for the first four ducks over the finish line!

World Record Attempt - the most motorbikes riding in staggered formation in a single group in support of sick children. Pediatric Care Africa is requesting all motorcycle clubs, motorcycle organisations and motorcyclists in the Western Cape, Eastern Cape and the rest of South Africa for a planned massive world record attempt motorcycle ride. To establish this record, we need a minimum of 4,500 motorcycles to ride as one group, in staggered formation, for the last 50km to Jeffreys Bay.

Plettenberg Bay will get a taste of the Rio de Janeiro festival atmosphere when a Street Carnival parade will samba its way through the streets to raise funds for the Green Hearts organisation. The parade will include dancing girls, a marching field band, a drill squad and even a karate display. The Street Carnival parade starts at the Plettenberg Bay police station, moving across Marine Way, into Main Street. The parade will move down Beacon Way to the Informal Trading Station where a feast of mouth-watering treats will be on sale.

A Van Plettenberg Historical Society talk. Our next talk takes us back to the Boer War and one of its most intriguing events. This alarming headline was widely distributed in November 1899 after Churchill’s capture by a Boer commando and subsequent daring escape. Rodney Grosskopff will describe how a young Winston Churchill in his days in the British Army working as a war correspondent for The Morning Post, was captured from a derailed armoured train by a Boer commando. We will then learn how Churchill escaped from the State Model School in Pretoria and eventually, from the safety of Lourenço Marques, made his way to Durban by boat to a hero’s welcome.
