What's on in and around Knysna

We’re inviting surfers of all levels, riding all crafts to float, surf or rip! You’ll be surfing in teams (make your own or we’ll put you in one) to the judging criteria of “most impressive surfing wins” - you can be impressive by having a party wave with your whole team on a giant inflatable SUP, getting barreled, doing a cockroach in the barrel or doing an air reverse. The point is to come hang on the beach, have a laugh and have a surf.

This route offers the perfect opportunity for gravel-bikers to take on the 29ers. E-bikers are also welcome on this non-technical route. 7Passes MTB also offers a shorter route for younger or not so fit riders who still want to be part of the action! Leeuwenbosch Dairies will once again support the 38km event which starts from the Highlands Cash Store in the humble little village of Karatara.

Red Men Trail Run is an annual 5km, 12km or 18km trail run in the Outeniqua Mountains with start and finish at Herold Wines. Herold Wines will provide picnic lunches - which can be ordered with your entry. Bring the family, and enjoy a fantastic run in the mountains, followed by a picnic under the trees.

South Africa’s premier one-day mountain bike race. An adventure through the desert and mountains of the Klein Karoo with a finish at the Garden Route Coast. If you’re looking for the most extreme test of your skills and endurance, then the toughest one-day MTB race in South Africa is the perfect opportunity for you to push yourself to the limit. This is the race to do if you want to test mind, body and machine!

Get ready for an adrenaline-packed adventure at one of the most anticipated events in the breathtaking Garden Route! Set against the scenic backdrop of Jonkersberg near Geelhoutboom, the routes promise thrilling challenges for all skill levels. MTB - 26km, 38km & 52km. E- Bike - 53km. Trail Run - 9km. The PSA Squash Tour is coming to Mossel Bay!! We are so thrilled to announce that Mossel Bay Squash Club will be hosting our first International Professional Squash Tournament. The PSA Challenger Tour event will boast a total amount of $3000 USD prize money and it will feature South Africa's best squash players as well as players from abroad. This event is an amazing opportunity for our community to get exposure to squash at the highest level as well as exciting opportunities for our youth to get on court with these players.

For the first time ever, a PSA Squash Tour event will run in conjunction with the festival and showcase the best squash talent in South Africa.

Prepare to immerse yourself in two days of riding around the famous Witfontein Mountains. Riders will head straight into the many and countless SAN Parks trails that are on offer in the area. Come home to a vibrant chill zone and camp out on the fields that make up the NMU Campus. Explore parts of the Saasveld that you would never have before and enjoy the vibe that makes Weekend Warrior one of the fastest-growing stage race names in the Western Cape. Choose between 10 km, 25 km, and 50 km routes on offer and join the Weekend Warrior series. Whether you are a seasoned pro or a first-time participant, Weekend Warrior is an event that caters to all levels of cycling enthusiasts and promotes a love for the sport as a family activity.

2024 information - It is next to the SA Biathlon Championships, the biggest biathlon event in South Africa. About 551 athletes from eight provinces will participate in this event.

Over the past 13 years these Festivals have become an integral part of our school, not only to grow the game of water polo, but also to expose our beautiful town and everything it has to offer to the festival visitors.

A weekend of fun sailing, sundowners, friends, great food, camping and memories. A great place to spend a weekend with great sunsets and views of the lagoon. The historic regatta goes back to 1928 and now features yacht racers from East London, Port Elizabeth, Knysna, George, Mossel Bay and Cape Town.

Start at Libertas Guest Farm on the Seven Passes road. Scenic route through Swartvlei Equestrian Farm, up the infamous Rondevlei hill back to the farm. Lots of gravel but not trail.

This will be an ambitious four-day event, open to all cars registered for the George Old Car Show. The rally will be run to regulations as laid down by the South African Vintage and Veteran Association (SAVVA) and Motorsport South Africa (MSA). Competitors will be required to nominate the average speeds for their cars over the timed sections of the rally, ranging from 65 to 95 km/h, according to the age of their vehicles. Veteran cars are those built before 1918, vintage cars are built up until 1930, and the classic cars eligible for the rally are to have been built before 31st of December, 1975. The Tour which runs alongside the rally each day is non-competitive, for those owners simply wishing to enjoy their cars in the company of other enthusiasts, in compelling scenery over interesting roads.

One of the most popular races on the athletics calendar, the 5 km and 10 km Nite Race will take place again. Medals for the first 300 finishers on the 10km and first 50 on the 5km who complete the race within the cut-off time. Lots of Lucky draws.

Welcome to South Africa's most diverse stage race. The Ride is the original four-day mountain biking event that combines thrilling biking, excellent accommodation, and top-notch glamping. Following over 280 kms along the famous Garden Route and finishing 4 days later, we’ve decided to spend the final 2 stages of the 2025 edition exploring the Tsitsikamma Forest. Whether you’re a dedicated racer or a relaxed rider this is a spectacular journey you shouldn’t miss.

The Tour follows 15 minutes after the “Ride” and follows the exact route while offering the same amenities. However, it provides a more relaxed experience with open-start chutes, opportunities to enjoy lunch breaks along the way, and no timed starts. This means you can make it an all-day affair without feeling pressured. The Tour doesn’t have winners or podiums; instead, it allows you to fully immerse yourself in the paradise of mountain biking.

2024 information - A 1.6km open water swim event with the purpose of raising funds for the upgrade of facilities at the Môreson ACVV Child & Youth Care Centre. Enter as a swimmer in preparation for the next Ironman event later this year. Bring the family for a day of fun. Food Stalls available.

2024 information - A wheelchair race exclusively for disabled athletes! And - every year it is getting bigger and better! The number of entries has increased dramatically, with disabled athletes and other persons in wheelchairs flocking to this annual event. The Challenge is unique as being the first and only event exclusively for the disabled in South Africa. Athletes in racing wheelchairs, adapted bicycles, hand cycles, basketball chairs and ordinary wheelchairs have made this into the premier sporting event for the disabled on the South African sporting calendar. It undoubtedly has the potential to develop into one of the best events of its kind in the world!

The motivation for this series is to encourage ALL riders from various disciplines to give Dressage a go, and have some fun doing so! There will be Graded, Recreational and Musical Freestyle classes. This competition is based on a simple points system, whereby each horse/rider combination is awarded points for meeting various criteria. There will be a separate points system for Recreational riders, but they will still stand a chance to win their own “grand prize” at the end of the series.

Get your running shoes ready for the 5km and 9km Redberry Farm Trail Run! The route will take you through the strawberry fields and kiwi fields with a spectacular panoramic view of the Outeniqua Mountains as your backdrop. Please note this is not a timed trail run and is not accredited. A water station will be available on both routes. All proceeds will go towards CANSA.

The tournament provides rural cricketers with a platform to display their skills, passion, and determination. Players from different regions will compete in front of selectors and coaches, offering opportunities for rising stars. The tournament will feature intense cricket matches played in various formats, allowing athletes to demonstrate their versatility and teamwork. Cricket fans can look forward to an exhilarating event, as rural talent competes on a national stage.

SA Beach Hockey Federation is launching their first landmark event. A unique twist to the traditional game, combining hockey with the exhilaration of beach sports. The event will feature junior boys and girls, senior men and women teams, and will include beach hockey equipment and prizes.

The 21,1 km walk and the 21,1 km starts at 06:00 from the Ou Tol. The 42,2 km starts at 06:00 from the Cango Caves. Beer tent and food stalls available on sports field.

This fast and flat marathon is a great qualifier for Two Oceans and Comrades. The scenic route takes you out along the lagoon to Leisure Isle, and then back out to the Phantom Pass Road, and finishes at Thesen Island. Many a PB has been done on this route. There are options for a 42.2km full marathon, the 21.1km half-marathon, a 10km, and also a 5km fun run.

2024 information - Enjoy the World of Showjumping starting from 70cm all the way to the 1.30m Equi-feeds Equestrian Mini Grand Prix and the 1.40m Equine Librium Grand Prix. The perfect day out for the whole family!

In an effort to keep all our athletes happy we are presenting a multisport event with a touch of adventure racing to spice things up. Athletes may compete as individuals or in a relay format. The route will be plotted on Google and other maps and check points will be collected. The Navigation will be simple and just spice things up a bit. Distances are approximate as you will be navigating - run 5km - ride 20km - run/kloof 2km.

Participants will traverse scenic and challenging terrain, including coastal paths, dense forests, and the rugged beauty of the Outeniqua Mountains, immersing themselves in the region’s natural wonders. This marathon is not only a test of endurance but also a celebration of the area’s rich biodiversity. Runners will navigate a route that winds through fynbos-covered hills, indigenous forests, and alongside the Touw River, ensuring a varied and demanding challenge. With multiple categories designed to accommodate different fitness levels, the event is inclusive, welcoming both seasoned athletes and recreational runners. Beyond the competitive race, the marathon will engage the local community, with vibrant food stalls, entertainment, and opportunities to explore local vendors.

Calling All Thrill Seekers and Obstacle Warriors! The ultimate test of strength, endurance, and teamwork! Whether you're a first-timer or a seasoned competitor, this obstacle race promises an adrenaline-pumping adventure with rugged terrain, exciting challenges, and epic rewards.

Our premier PDGA sanctioned event in George. PDGA C-tier event. Sunday afternoon - round 1 followed by social gathering and glow round. Monday morning - round 2.

Gade 7 learners from nine schools will be participating in what promises to be a fun filled day of box car racing by the learners and a few novelty races. There will be food stalls providing boerie rolls, pancakes an other goodies. All welcome

Competitors fly in rounds. Each round has a different task associated with it, and each has a flight task and a landing task. Most flight tasks are based on some form of precision flight time (seven minutes, plus or minus, from the time of winch line disconnect to contact with the ground). The closer the landing is made to the target time, the more points are awarded. Landing targets an exact spot; the closer to the spot, the more points gained. Typically, 10 sailplanes will launch at the same time.

Classic Car Friday, catering exclusively for historic, classic and vintage cars, kicks off on Thursday at the Fan Fest where cars will be scrutineered and on public display until it closed with the very popular and entertaining parade in Waterfront Drive. The glorious cars from pre-war to 1995 will grace the hill on Friday while drivers, friends and spectators are encouraged to attend in period dress.

Get ready for a high-adrenaline day on the water! The Knysna Waterski Competition is back and better than ever. Set against the stunning backdrop of Knysna’s lush forest and serene private lake, this event brings together top waterski talent, thrilling action, and family-friendly vibes.

The first Vic Bay Quad took place back in 1976 and is held annually and named in honour of Southern Cape surfing legend, John Pfaff. It has become one of the most prestigious surfing competitions in South Africa.

Saturday and Sunday’s action has been dubbed the King of the Hill Shootout and is where the country’s fastest machinery will duel it out on the Simola hill. Fans will witness some of the country’s meanest, sleekest, prettiest and most spectacular cars taking to the track during the weekend.

This is a free competition with some really awesome prizes up for grabs. We got you covered with some Leka equipment to play on. We also have a raffle, lucky draw and more. So bring your skills or happy cheers for a leka day out for the whole family Look forward to cheering on some great skating and having a fun day out for the whole family.

The Mountain Ultra Trail or MUT by UTMB is a festival of trail running. The Outeniqua Mountains rise from the urban edge and provide a spectacular adventure seeker’s playground, with hundreds of kilometers of hiking trails criss-crossing the peaks, which reach up to 1,578 meters above sea level, and verdant valleys. Fynbos, one of the world’s most biodiverse floral kingdoms, and old growth indigenous forests line the trails, while the high points along the MUT by UTMB route provide breath-taking views over the Indian Ocean to the south and across the arid Karoo to the north.

 

This is South Africa’s ultimate race with 361km and a maximum of 36.1 hours to complete it. While this race remains a mountain bike race in our opinion, participants now have the flexibility to take it on with a gravel- or mountain bike, so choose wisely! If you are not up for the full Challenge you can take on The Half or opt for The Relay in a team of 4.

More than just a competition, the Unity Cup is about Growing Business Through Golf where lasting relationships are built on the fairways and in the clubhouse. Whether you're playing or partnering, this is your chance to be part of something special.

The CA2CX is a mountain biking tour that every keen cyclist should experience. This isn't a faced-paced race but a fun tour that takes you through the picturesque landscape of our beautiful province each year in June. The daily route, of about 100km per day is, consists of farmlands, spectacular landscapes and amazing views. Riders can enter one of the following groups: 14 - 18kph, 18 - 22kph or 22kph and up. Accommodation throughout the race will be at 3 - 5 star guesthouses and hotels.

2024 information - The Knysna Forest Marathon features many unique highlights that cannot be found in any other trail run in the world. True to its name, most of the route runs deep into the Knysna Forest with breathtaking views over the estuary and even the iconic Knysna Heads, a great distraction to get you through those last few kilometers.

2024 information - This trail run offers 3 routes of varying lengths and difficulty. Taking runners through the forests made famous by Daleen Mathee (the late authoress of Circles in the forest, Fiela’s child, Moerbeibos and others). The 15km and 27km routes have been chosen not only to challenge the intermediate to experienced trail runners but to provide them with an opportunity to experience the deepest secrets at the heart of the Garden Route National park. Single track and terrain to excite trail runners of all ability including an easier route for the beginner trail runner of 9km.

Held every year, South Africa’s longest-running bodyboarding contest draws crowds of holiday makers to compete and watch the action. The Wedge Beach - as its name suggests - is one of South Africa’s favorite wedging breaks and ideal for the acrobatic manoeuvres that are popular with bodyboarders. The beach also offers various vantage points from which to watch the action.

50 teams of 2 set out to unknown venues around Knysna where they must solve riddles and clues and fulfill tasks that require abilities in sports etc.

Enjoy a stunning 5KM run with 2 scenic wine stops on the way. ‘Grab and go’ or take your time and enjoy the company of friends over a glass of wine. Stick around after the run for some awesome give-aways, food specials, wine tasting and great entertainment!

Choose your challenge: rugged MTB trails or smooth, fast road courses! Feel the energy of thousands of cyclists pushing their limits!

One of the less known sports tournaments is the Netball Oyster Tournament, which will ensure exciting moments on the netball courts.

Experience the enchanting Knysna Forest. Ride through dense indigenous forest, surrounded by towering trees and lush ferns. Choose between a 85, 45 or 30 km loop, and embrace invigorating climbs and thrilling descents. Conquer gravel roads and navigate jeep tracks in this magical and captivating natural landscape. All cyclists, including those with gravel bikes, MTBs, and E-bikes, are welcome.

2024 information - The tournament is the jewel in the crown of the Knysna Local Football Association’s annual competition calendar.

Timing: 25 + 5 sipm per player. 6 Rounds: Swiss Pairing System. Open to all age groups and playing strength.

The KnysnaX Trail Run is a 1 day trail running event. Each event forms part of the KnysnaX Trail Series which consist of 4 events over 365 days. These events will take place during each season. Trail Running at its best. Another new route added for the Winter Run at the KnysnaX Trail Series. All our routes will follow some amazing railway sections, forest and scenes of the Goukamma river, Knysna Lagoon and more. We are very excited to announce the 6km fun run too. A fun scenic trail run for the entire family. Children are welcome to enter this fun run but must kindly be accompanied by an adult. The routes include spectacular bridge crossings and breathtaking scenery all along the Knysna Railway. A trail run you do not want to miss.

In 2024, skydivers around the globe set a World Skydiving Day Record by making 30,351 jumps in a single day. In 2025 we are going to break that record and we need YOUR help! This collaboration, which started with four of the largest skydiving associations in the world, will be historic - and we want YOU to be part of it! Submit proof of your skydive and be counted in the World Skydiving Day Record. This includes tandem skydives, as well as jumps made by licensed skydivers.

 

The KKK is the oldest annual event of Oudtshoorn Motor Club. This event has been one of the biggest events in South Africa mainly due to the traditional Klein Karoo hospitality that the competitors, their families and the spectators experience. The Klein Karoo Championships is one of the biggest events in motor sport in South Africa, hosted by the smallest Oval track club in South Africa...

With both 50 km and 100 km options, these scenic routes cater to riders of varying endurance levels. Starting in the heart of Knysna, the courses take you along winding roads framed by lush forests and breathtaking coastal views, providing a ride that’s as visually rewarding as it is thrilling. Whether you’re a seasoned cyclist aiming for a new personal best or looking to enjoy a beautiful ride with fellow enthusiasts, these races offer an unforgettable journey through one of South Africa’s most scenic regions.

Whether you're a junior or senior paddler, this canoe race offers an exhilarating adventure across the lagoon. This canoe race incorporates the iconic Knysna Heads, Thesen Island, and the Knysna Yacht Club. Course: 12km & 24km (and 4km junior race). All single and double canoe and surfski vessels welcome. Choose your course and come join the fun. Under 15s junior event available too! Spectators, join us at the lagoon edge & waterfront - enjoy the vibe and catch some epic race action!

The beautiful and untouched gem of the Garden Route will host riders on this 3-day mountain bike stage ride. With tracks hugging the rugged coastline and views only seen on postcards, this ride is designed for the intermediate cyclist looking for an adventure without having to spend hours training every day. The daily distances range from 40-70 kms and will traverse the mountains, plantations and coastline adjacent to the Village.

The SOX Trail Run is known as the most diverse 3-day trail run in South Africa, with 90% of the route laid out within the South Africa National Park’s protected property. You will run on pristine hiking trails in the mountain on day one, experience the tranquillity of our lush, indigenous forest on day two and end off, with day three, along the stunning coastline of the Garden Route.

Cape Country Unplugged (CCU) is a laid-back, untimed, 6-day, 500km Mountainbike Tour. The CCU offers full en route support and includes 3-4 star accommodation, 3 meals a day, luggage transport, medical support and well stocked waterpoints. Also included is free beer and wine, as well as regular slide shows by professional photographers. The Tour is suitable for mountain-, gravel- and e-bikes. The route mainly follows quiet, lesser known gravel and farm backroads. The Tour provides for a Full distance as well as a Light option.

Lions Karoo to Coast is a 100km solo mountain bike challenge starting in Uniondale and crossing the Prince Alfred’s Pass in to Knysna. The route is scenic, challenging and riders are encouraged to train sufficiently for this event in order to maximise the enjoyment of the experience. The Lions Karoo to Coast welcomes MTB, Gravel and E-Bikes! The Lions Karoo to Coast Mountain Bike Race has been selected as an Official Premier Seeding Event of the 2025 Cape Town Cycle Tour.

The "Race With Soul" Get ready for the exhilarating 2025 edition of the Cape Pioneer! 2025 sees the 2nd edition of the rebirth of the Cape Pioneer, now boasting a shorter name and route, but undoubtedly the individual stages will be as challenging as they are rewarding! Over the past 16 years, we’ve explored the Karoo and Coast, journeying from Prince Albert to Riversdale, and from Calitzdorp to Mossel Bay. We’ve crossed rivers, conquered vast mountain ranges, faced natural disasters, and triumphed over pandemics. This expedition has led us to unveil our best route yet - 2025 promises a challenging, diverse, scenic, and ultimately rewarding experience along the Karoo and Garden Route.

The Grail of Trail™. The Otter African Trail event takes place annually and runs in the opposite direction each year. The Otter Edition traverses East to West starting in Storms River and finishing in Natures Valley. With the Retto Edition Running West to East, from Natures Valley to Storms River. The 42km route features rugged Indian Ocean coastline trails, indigenous forests, river crossings, spectacular scenery and 7,000 steps on average. 2024 information - Firefighters from all over the country will compete against one another. The South African challenge is unique in that it truly tests firefighters' resolve. Our competition is the biggest in Africa and in fact, on par with the international contest. There will also be a mini Toughest Firefighter Alive challenge, for children aged three to 12 years of age. The junior challenge is not a competition, but allows children to participate in fun activities while experiencing some of the real thrills and adrenaline of being a real firefighter. There will be industry-related activities and exhibitions.

The Oyster Catcher stage trail run follows the famous Oyster Catcher hiking route, from the Gouritz River Mouth to Mossel Bay via the St Blaize hiking route along the Southern Cape coastline in the Garden Route. The Oystercatcher trail is a world acclaimed experience. The Oyster Catcher trail run is primarily designed for trail runners looking to complete their first multi-day stage race. The distances covered are manageable and the terrain is made up mainly of single track (hiking trails) and beach running, with some technical areas to add variety.

Prince George is the most diverse one-day race you’ll ever experience. Cycle the Klein Karoo, Great Karoo & Garden Route all in one day! Covering 2 mountain passes, 3 geographical areas, and a world heritage site! The vast landscapes and diverse overload of this non-technical routes are the perfect race for all mountain and gravel bike enthusiasts, with ample opportunity to appreciate the unique surroundings you’ll be exposed to.

Get out there and enjoy a great day of riding on some of Plett's most challenging and rewarding mountain bike trails. This year will include the final round of Eden MTB XCM series with Edne colours up for grabs. 60km, 40 km & 16km MTB races, catering for all.

The Klein Karoo Dust 4 Glory Challenge is the only obstacle course challenge in the Garden Route and Klein Karoo region. It will be a weekend of fun and adventure for families, friends, corporate colleagues or scholars. Participants can enter individually or as part of a team (although team members start together, they do not need to finish together). Just bring your running shoes and have a great time.

Gravel Burn is a 7-day, 850km full-service gravel stage race through South Africa’s diverse landscapes. Starting in coastal forests, the route heads into the breathtaking Great Karoo - a famously vast, semi-desert region. Riders rest each night in remote camps under star-filled skies and, on the final day, greeted by Africa’s iconic Big 5 wildlife.

The Dryland Traverse is a race like no other! The four-day stage race, which showcases the classic trails of the Klein Karoo, has fast become a favourite on the South African running scene. It kicks off with an underground start in the world-famous Cango Caves (this is the only event that has permission to take runners through this area). The stages ahead include traversing the mighty Swartberg Mountains - a UNESCO World Heritage Site, breathtaking views of the Great and Klein Karoo, and trails that run past the renowned Raubenheimer Dam. There simply is no equal when it comes to the sense of achievement, setting and overall spirit of this event - the Rhodes Dryland Traverse is a must for every adventure-seeker!

Africa's toughest and most beautiful triathlon. No Sugar Coating - No Hand Holding - No Fanfare. Triathlon in its purest form. The Knysna Extreme Triathlon is a truly unique and unforgettable experience. Triathletes begin with a 5km swim in the Knysna Estuary, followed by a 174km bike route that takes them through diverse landscapes of coastline, mountains, and semi-desert regions. The final discipline is a challenging 50km run with windy mountain passes, lush plantations and finishing through the dense Knysna forest. The route is as tough as it is stunning, pushing athletes to their limits physically, mentally, and emotionally - from start to finish.

2024 information - Herold Primary is having a Fundraiser to help keep their little school’s doors open. This is a brand new event, and was planned to included a 21km on Montagu Pass, but due to the recent floods, the pass is not safe lower down, to get the distance for the 21km. We have decided to continue with the event, but only have a 5km and a 10km run, followed by tons of fun for the whole family!

2024 information - IRONMAN 70.3® races consist of a 1.2 mile/1.9 kilometer swim, a 56-mile/90 kilometer bike and a 13.1 mile/21.1 kilometer run. You can almost taste it. Your IRONMAN 70.3 finish line beckons, with its crowds, bright lights, and music. A sense of accomplishment is like the wind at your back, pushing you forward over the final steps. It's your goal, your dream, your finish...seize it now.

Fabulous fun on some of South Africa’s most beautiful trails, exclusively for Women (and Girls). Run on beautiful purpose build trails and enjoy an exciting day out or weekend away with your friends. Trail Girl events are ideal mini-break experiences and girls-only weekend getaways. It’s also the perfect introduction to multi-day Trail Running events. Treat yourself to a weekend of trail running, new friends and fun you deserve!

Contrary to the name the Dr Evil Experience is aimed at normal FUN riders as well as hardcore athletes. The three days will ALL be under 70 kilometers in distance. Leon Evans has created routes that are interesting, scenic and will test those who set out with the intention of racing the event. Each stage of the three-day event promises a unique view of Plettenberg Bay & surrounds.

Explore the back roads and hilltops of the untamed Garden Route... The planned route runs from Redberry Farm, along the Outeniqua Mountains, mostly on district gravel roads, here and there moving to Jeep tracks, through Herbertsdale until reaching the finish line at Jakkalsvlei Wine Cellars.

The Plett Street Mile will form part of the Garden Route Street Mile series. It is expected to attract top athletes from across South Africa.
